E.J. Farrell, writing in his book Prayer is a Hunger, speaks so well to our forgetfulness:
We ask for a piece of sand
And God give us a beach,
We ask for a drop of water
And God gives us an ocean
We ask for time
And God gives us life eternal
And it is so easy to fall in love with the gift
And forget the giver.
I wonder if the reason we fill our lives full of so many things and fill our calendars with parties and work is that we have forgotten the Giver.
In this week of American Thanksgiving, perhaps we would do well to remember all of those things we have been given, or, perhaps, this year, we might spend a bit more time remembering the Giver.
